How will you get through what you have to go through? How will your family ever be okay again? How will you overcome this setback? How will your heart heal? How will you know what to do next? How will it ever happen? How? Somebody tell me how.
If you’re in a place wondering HOW, I have the clear and definitive answer for you today. I mean this is as clear as it gets, and it’s 100% certain. It’s not some random accident that you’re listening to this precise episode on the day you’re listening. It’s not odd, it’s God. God in his great providence aligned the answer for you here today.
If the question on your heart is “how”, your answer is found in the beginning of the Christmas story. Before baby Jesus was in a manager, a virgin was engaged to be married. Before the wise men showed up with gifts, a young woman asked the same question you’re asking today. How?
When it doesn’t make any sense. When you don’t see the way. When it seems totally impossible. This is how …
Luke 1: 29-35:
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Here’s Mary, engaged to a fine young man named Joseph, and suddenly here comes an angel telling her she’s going to have a baby, and this baby will be great! But Mary is confused because she is a virgin. What the angel is proposing is impossible. It doesn’t make any sense. And Mary responds with, “How?”
Mary is asking the same question you and I are asking today. How? How, God, how is this going to happen? Tell me how. Maybe you’re not asking how are you going to get pregnant, or maybe you are. But you’re asking “how” for something, aren’t you? You don’t know what else to do. You don’t see the way. It looks impossible.
And the angel not only gives Mary her answer, but this angel also gives us our answer today, “The Holy Spirit.”
Yes, that is your answer.
How will you get through what you have to go through? The Holy Spirit.
How will your family ever be okay again? The Holy Spirit.
How will you overcome this setback? The Holy Spirit.
How will your heart heal? The Holy Spirit.
How will you know what to do next? The Holy Spirit.
How will it ever happen? The Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is God’s divine power living within you. Jesus said in John 14:26, “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
We’re being supernaturally guided by the Holy Spirit. We’re not doing this on our own! Our eyes are being opened to things we would otherwise miss. Our thoughts are divinely directed. The word of God has gotten inside of you and prompts you in the way you should go. I mean seriously, how cool is that?!!!
What does Jesus mean when he calls the Holy Spirit the “Advocate”? In Greek, the word is “Paraclete,” and it literally means someone who comes alongside us. It suggests that we’re struggling, and he comes to be with us in our struggles and he helps us. He comes to counsel and comfort us.
The Bible refers to the devil as “the Accuser.” He accuses us day and night in God’s presence of all our sins. For real, did you know that’s what he does? Read Revelation 12:10. The devil never stops bringing up your name to God, pointing out every thing you have done wrong. He continually accuses you, over and over again. But the Holy Spirit, “the Advocate” defends us. Imagine this scene for a moment. It’s like a courtroom.
The devil has exhibit A through Z against you. The highlight reel of all your worst moments. He replays your sins on a continual loop, proof of all the reasons God should be disappointed in you. But our Advocate defends us. Our Advocate, the Holy Spirit, says, “she’s covered.” Forgiven. Innocent. Not guilty. Covered.
Have you seen the clever video going around of the woman answering phone calls for Heaven. She is Heaven’s hotline representative. There she sits with her little headset on, answering calls. She listens to the caller, then responds, “that sin is covered.” She listens again, “that sin is covered too.” The caller continues. Heaven’s hotline representative continues to listen, her eyes get big, and she responds, “well, that’s a new one, but that sin is for sure covered.”
The Holy Spirit advocates for you. He defends you. He stands for you. He covers you. The accuser can accuse until he can’t accuse no more, the Holy Spirit will always have the last word. That girl is covered. She is forgiven. She is not guilty.
The Holy Spirit not only fights for you, but he puts the fight in you. Power, pure power, within you! Jesus says in Acts 1:8, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” What’s a girl like you going to do with a power like this? She’s going to live, darn it! She’s going to show up like she’s supposed to be here! She’s going to crawl out of this hole and move forward with confidence, knowing God has so much more for her. That’s a word for someone. POWER!
Micah 3:8, “But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might.” Girl, start showing up to your battles like this! As for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord!
Stop confessing that you are overwhelmed. Stop speaking defeated words. Stop agreeing with the accuser of your soul that you are not good enough. Stop believing that you’re stuck, helpless and hopeless. No, girl, you are filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord!!!!!
And that’s how you will get through this. That’s how you will get up again today and do what you feel you don’t have the strength to do. That’s how you will get better. That’s how you will heal. That’s how you will be the mom you need to be. The Holy Spirit!
Mary could not understand how in the world she, a virgin, could possibly be pregnant. It was impossible. It didn’t make sense. There was no way. “How will this be”, she said? The Holy Spirit!
How will your family overcome this? The Holy Spirit.
How will you be whole again? The Holy Spirit.
How will you heal after what has happened to you? The Holy Spirit.
How will you find a job, find a home, find love? The Holy Spirit.
How will you know what to do next? The Holy Spirit.
How will you have the strength required? The Holy Spirit.
How will you find where you’re supposed to be? The Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit, be my advocate and be my guide. Be my power and be my strength.
If you’re asking how, the answer is the Holy Spirit! You don’t have to understand it any more than that.
