What if you’re really not supposed to understand all of this? What if the feelings you feel are completely normal, however they were never meant to be your guide?

We spend so much time and energy on trying to make sense of things that simply don’t make sense, then we argue about who we think got it right. We’re all probably wrong as we act completely ridiculous.

Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Yip, the bible is being serious when it tells you not to depend on your ability to understand everything. Your quest to make sense of it, feel okay about it, and somehow have the slightest bit of control over it, will no doubt take you off course.

Trust isn’t required if you already understand it. I have to trust the lights will turn on when I flip that switch because honestly I have no clue how electricity really works. If I understood it all, I wouldn’t flip the switch in faith, I would flip it in knowledge. God calls us to TRUST HIM, not understand him. He calls us to follow him in the way we should go, not lead him in the way we think it should go.

Maybe you’re smack dab in the middle of things that don’t make sense right now. Things you think God should have changed by now. Things you can’t understand or see God’s hand in. Things you specifically prayed wouldn’t happen, but they are. Times like this cause us to question. It’s natural. We can’t understand the mysteries of God, and we’re not supposed to … that’s why they’re called mysteries.

But you know what ruins a good mystery movie? Trying to figure it all out in advance. That’s what ruins the whole story. You try to see where it’s all going and plot it out in your head, while missing the unfolding of the story. Yes, unfolding … there’s that word God keeps giving us!

Maybe you’re ruining the good story God is writing here because you’re trying to see where it’s going instead of just trusting the unfolding as it happens. But again, scripture says TRUST the Lord and stop depending on your own understanding. You’re NOT going to figure this out here. You think you know the plot, but girl there’s a plot twist you won’t see coming. It’s the twist where God takes all the enemy meant for evil and he turns it for good.

Your heart is deceitful. You know why? Because your heart is real close to your stomach, and just like your stomach can get tricked into choosing what you want NOW over what you want MOST. You can fall for the counterfeit, fast and easy offerings of the enemy over the genuine, slow roasted offerings of God. Hey, good things take some time and we have to be willing to wait for them. This requires trust. Trust while we don’t see it, we know it’s coming. Trust while it hurts like heck right now, God is gong to redeem that hurt. Trust while it burns, these ashes will be traded for beauty.

Your emotions fluctuate. One minute you’ll feel confident and the next you’ll feel defeated. If you are lead by your emotions, you will be running circles never getting anywhere. You know what ruins a good healthy lifestyle faster than anything? Asking how you FEEL about following through with it today. You know what ruins a good budget? Asking how you feel about not buying what you want right now. You know what ruins a good routine? Asking what you feel like doing right now. Your feelings will get you in trouble girl! Your feelings are fickle and flip on a dime. You’re in, then you’re out. You’re on, then you’re off. You’re certain, then you’re cautious. And really what it makes you is crazy. Don’t be lead by your emotions, they are not a trustworthy guide.

Your understanding does not see the big picture. It only sees the past and a tiny, limited view of the now. You don’t understand what’s going on in the places you cannot see, and there’s a whole lot more happening in the unseen than the seen, so how could your understanding ever be trusted here? How could understanding it all ever be a good plan? As we wait to make perfect sense of everything, life passes us by and we miss the opportunities to live while we can.

Today, you have an opportunity to live. This opportunity likely comes with less than perfect conditions. This specific opportunity is likely layered with confusing, frustrating, conflicting, loose ends that drive you crazy. And that’s why the Bible says don’t depend on understanding all of this, trust God and get to living! As you seek God, he won’t reveal all the details to you, but he will guide you to the next step on the right path.

That’s it. You won’t see exactly where this path is leading. You won’t know for sure how long it will take to get there. You will simply have to trust the way will be shown one step at a time as you trust God with your whole heart as he leads you through things that don’t make sense.

You’re smack dab in the middle of the mystery. Here you are where few things make sense and there are a lot of unanswered questions. Don’t get stuck in this. Don’t sit here until you understand it. Trust God to lead you through it and one day when you look back you will maybe understand a bit of the mystery. Or maybe not.

Can you make peace with not understanding it? Can you make peace with not knowing? Can you trust God fully, knowing that his ways are truly higher, bigger and better than your own? Can you see the beauty of the story he is writing, even while you don’t understand it?

Trying to figure this out ruins it. Just let it unfold and trust the author.

God, we don’t understand, but we trust you. Our trust in you will trump our feelings, our emotions and our understanding.

All we have to offer today is our obedient next step in faith, and God says ‘honey, that’s all I ever asked you for, let’s move forward.’
