Yesterday on a flight from Springfield, MO to Dallas, TX, I was seated near a 6 year old boy with absolutely zero filter. If he thought it, it was coming out of his mouth, for good or for bad. It made for a rather entertaining flight and I was glad he wasn’t my responsibility. Boarding the plane, he said with an extreme amount of drama, “I don’t want to be off vacation. This makes me feel horrible.” The majority of the airplane agreed with him.

As we lifted off, he stared out the window in awe and said, “wait, why is the airport getting smaller and smaller?!!!” He watched until the airport was no longer in sight and his dad said, “now we’re getting closer to our next airport.” For the rest of the flight, I couldn’t stop thinking about this.

Smaller and smaller means further and further. Further and further means closer. Closer to where you’re going next.

Some of the things in our lives are growing smaller and smaller as we move forward. This is God’s design for us. We leave where we once were and we become more like who God is making us to be. When we refuse to leave, we get stuck. What was meant to be temporary becomes our comfort zone, and we grow roots where we were supposed to just pass through.

In your desire for comfort, have you grown stagnant? In your pursuit of finding peace, have you settled? In fear of the unknown, have you stayed where you were supposed to catch a connecting flight on out?

You’re not supposed to stay in high school forever. You’re meant to move on, and as you move on, you look back and see your high school days grow smaller and smaller. We know that. We understand that.

Okay, but what about those other areas of your life?

Those unfair things that have happened to you are over. You don’t have to be stuck in them now. The enemy wants to hold you there in defeat, but that is not God’s plan for you. God’s plan for you is to lift off and watch it grow smaller and smaller as you go higher and higher, moving further and further into the future he has for you.

This is the entire journey of your life.

If life has grown stagnant and you’re stuck in the same hurt you were in 10 years ago, honey, you’ve missed your flight. This is not your end destination. You’re not meant to be here forever. You can move on now. You can. Will it always be easy? No. Will everyone understand? Probably not. But, you can.

God is inviting you today to move forward. Allow where you were, what you went through, and all that happened to become smaller and smaller as you move further and further. Remember, further and further means closer. Closer to where God is leading you next and closer to what he has for you now.

John 3:30 “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”

Less of me, God, more of you.

But do you mean that? Are you ready to become less and less so God can become greater and greater? Are you ready to leave where you were so he can take you to what he has next? This may mean letting go of what still doesn’t make sense. This may mean giving up your right to carry the victim card. This may mean doing the hard work for true healing. This may mean facing what you’ve been avoiding.

Are you ready to loosen your grip on all you’ve held so tightly and give it fully to him? Oh it sounds good, but the reality is, you’re trusting an unknown future to an unseen God.

For real, I’ve never seen God, have you? It’s a tall order to trust what you cannot see, but that is the order we’ve been given. All around us at this very moment are powers at work we cannot see. Heaven has come to fight for you against the attacks for the enemy, but you just thought you were sleepy on this Monday morning. Nope … there’s so much more going on in the unseen than you can possibly imagine.

Remember the story of Elisha’s servant who was fearful of the battle ahead and Elisha prayed in 2 Kings 6:17 “‘O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.’ Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

Oh Sis, I know you can’t see it right now, but you are surrounded by chariots of fire. Heaven’s armies have come to fight for you! The powers of hell are here to hold you back and keep you stuck in defeat, but God is here to carry you forward. Further and further, closer and closer to what he has for you next and who he created you to be.

So yes, you’re being asked to trust this unknown future to the unseen God that is working all around you. Yes, you’re being asked to move forward and watch what was, now become smaller and smaller. And yes, sometimes that feels like you’re now ‘off’ vacation and you’re not going to like it. But staying stuck here is not God’s intentions for you.

God is becoming greater and greater in you, as you become less and less. Smaller and smaller your old life must become, as closer and closer to your destiny you get.

2 Corinthians 4:16 MSG “So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace.”

Here we are, waking up to God’s unfolding grace where He is making new life for us. Sure it may look like some things are falling apart, but that’s part of the process as we become less and he becomes greater.

Today, trust this journey God has you on. Be willing to move forward to where he is leading you next. Let all that is comfortable and familiar grow smaller, knowing God is making new life for you in the process. You are covered by his grace and surrounded by his power. Always.

You may not always see his hand at work or feel his power within, but your absolute, undeniable truth is God is leading you to a place where you become less and less and he becomes greater and greater. This is where you discover the unfathomable, good plans God has for you!

Smaller and smaller. Further and further. Closer and closer.
