Wouldn’t it just be nice to know exactly what you’re supposed to do with what is coming next? Wouldn’t it be great to know how what you’re dealing with right now is going to all work out? Wouldn’t it be so much easier if you knew precisely when it’s going to happen so you could be prepared?
But you don’t, do you? You don’t know, and this not knowing is driving you crazy.
But, Sis, you’re not supposed to know!
This is on a need to know basis, and right now, you don’t need to know!
God gave me a clear message for you this morning as I was brushing my teeth. He said, “Tell her she will know what she needs to know when she needs to know it.” Honey, if you don’t know right now, you don’t need to know right now.
How much energy have you wasted trying to figure this out, when figuring it out isn’t God’s plan for you today. God’s plan for you today is to trust that he has it figured out for you, and he’s going to let you in on it when it’s time for you to know.
Jesus said in John 13:7 “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” You can’t possibly fathom what Jesus is doing for you today. You can’t see how he is working behind the scenes in the details, aligning places and people perfectly for a divine plan you’re not aware of yet, but just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Oh, it’s happening, and it’s happening right now. You just don’t understand it now … and get this … you’re not supposed to understand it now. But someday you will.
If you don’t understand it now, what are you supposed to do with it now? Stop stressing about it and trust God!
Instead, here’s the path you’ve been trying. You’ve been depending on your own understanding to make these decisions. And maybe you’ve been royally screwing this thing up because how can you possibly make the right decision over things you don’t understand. You can’t! So here’s a scripture to guide you in this uncertainty – Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Are you supposed to understand his will? No. You’re simply supposed to seek his will. Are you supposed to know with absolute certainty the path you’re supposed to take? No. You’re suppose to surrender each step to God and trust him to guide you. Ahhhhh, isn’t that so simple? And dang, it’s hard, isn’t it?
But look back over your life, and you will find God’s undeniable faithfulness in the details. Didn’t he guide you before? Hasn’t he worked out impossible situations for you in the past? Hasn’t he gotten you through the exact things you never thought you could get through? Yes he did, and yes he has. And guess what … he will do it again. He IS doing it again!
Trust him with your whole heart and stop trying to understand this. You will know what you need to know when you need to know it. If you don’t know today, it’s because you don’t need to know today.
I’ve learned to lean into the process of God revealing to me what I need to know when I need to know it, and not stressing about the unknowing before then. I had no idea what I was going to be talking to you about 1 hour ago. Literally, no clue! That used to stress me out. I used to need God to give me a 5 day plan the week before so I could feel more prepared.
Then I began to realize God doesn’t need me to feel prepared to work through me … he needs me fully seeking him. You know what keeps me fully seeking him … the unknown! I woke up this morning praying for the right topic, the right scriptures, the right stories and the right energy to share with you today, because I had no clue what it would be until I started brushing my teeth an hour ago! I know God will show me what I need to know when I need to know it. I just don’t need to know it until I’m sitting down to work on it.
Trusting God’s faithfulness to reveal what needs to be revealed precisely when it needs to be revealed has taught me to live in the divine flow of his power. It’s going to be there when I need it, and I don’t need to stress about it before I get there.
Did you hear that? It’s going to be there when you need it, and you don’t need to stress about it before you get there. You don’t need to know right now, or you would already know. Your understanding is not required at this point in time … your trust is. Trust God and stop depending on your own understanding.
God’s got this, and he will give you the details when you need the details, but honey, you don’t need them yet!
Your need for understanding this is causing you undue stress. You’re avoiding doing what needs to be done because you’re trying to understand it all instead of just trust God, and this is disobedience. For real, delaying your step of obedience in demand of understanding is disobedience. You know where disobedience will lead you? Places you don’t want to be!
Jonah was instructed by God to go somewhere he didn’t want to go and do something he didn’t want to do. Jonah just wanted to be sure it wouldn’t be too hard for him once he got there. He didn’t feel good enough. He didn’t understand the details. So, guess what he did … he went the other way.
Oh, we’ve done that, haven’t we? God prompts us to go, and we delay because we don’t understand. God directs our steps, but we won’t lift up our feet because we don’t feel good enough to go. We’re waiting to figure it out. We’re waiting to feel like it. We’re waiting to get all the details. And this is disobedience.
Jonah went the other way. He didn’t go where God was telling him to go to do what God was telling him to do, so he got swallowed by a big fish. Legit. Dude spent 3 days in the belly of a whale. Time to reevaluate his incessant need to understand over his obedient steps of faith in God. There, in the darkness of his self created mess, he says in Jonah 3:9 “But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good.”
It was a prayer of, Lord, if you will give me another chance, I will do this right. If you will get me out of this mess my disobedience got me into, I will trust you fully and stop trying to understand it. I will stop dismissing myself. I will trust you will tell me what I need to know when I need to know it, and if I don’t know it yet, I’m not supposed to know, I’m just supposed to trust.
And get this, with that prayer, the fish spit Jonah out and he went directly to where God had told him to go, and did what God told him to do. And what he didn’t know before was God had already prepared the hearts of the people there to receive him. God had already paved the way for his arrival. Jonah’s work was so much easier than he ever imagined! But, Jonah wouldn’t know any of that before his act of obedience. Why? Because he didn’t need to know … he needed to trust.
And the same is true for you and I today. We don’t need to know, we need to trust. Running from this will only create a mess. Avoiding this will only lead to darkness. Dismissing yourself from God’s call on your life will bring you to a pit you don’t want to be in. Trying to understand it will only make this harder. Trust it.
You’re not supposed to understand this. You’re not supposed to know right now. Why? Because now isn’t the time to know. Now is the time to trust fully and stop leaning on understanding. When you don’t understand, but you trust, you lean into the flow of God’s power that always shows up right on time, guiding you to do what you could never do on your own.
So, you’re in a place where you don’t understand and you don’t know what’s next? What a great place to be in! This is a place of God’s divine power guiding your steps as you trust in him fully. This is a sacred place of trust where you are asked to lean in instead of understanding. This is the place where you find peace in knowing you will know what you need to know when you need to know it … and right now, you simply don’t need to know.
