As you wait, are you wondering if God is really for you? Are you questioning if God really has a good plan here? All this waiting and wondering kinda zaps a girl’s hopes. If that’s where you are today; waiting, wondering, worrying, wishing, without any signs of God working, this devotional is specifically for you!
Now, I will warn you, the visual in this devotional will undoubtedly be vivid. You’ll get it. You will relate. And you won’t forget it. There will be no in between with this one … it will either be your absolute favorite, or it will be the one you never want to hear again. But you came here to hear what God gave me to share today, and here it is. Brace yourselves, and put down your chocolate protein shake. You won’t want that right now.
Yesterday I was having a conversation with a girl I mentor who has become a dear friend to me. For years she has been stuck in a job that was sucking the life out of her. She was exhausted, but she had to work. She couldn’t just quit. So, she continued. She prayed and prayed, asking God to open another door for her, but no doors, just this continued hallway of exhaustion.
Then, she said, when she least expected it, out of absolutely nowhere, she was given the most beautiful opportunity for a new job. It just suddenly happened. After all this time, all those prayers, all that waiting, all that frustration, it came out of nowhere and she starts her new job next week.
And I told her, “Sis, that’s because God works slowly, then suddenly.”
Here comes the visual, so put down the chocolate protein shake now …
Does anyone ever get a case of the shy poops when you’re traveling? It’s like your body knows when that toilet is not your own, and it just shuts down. There ain’t nothing happening! Your tummy is growing bloated, you’re in pain waiting, but nope, it ain’t happening. No home, no poop. You’re full blown constipated, blocked up, and in shut down status. She’s closed for business and those pants are not buttoning, folks.
No movement. No matter what you do, no matter how long you sit there and rock, even trying the old pulling your knees to your chest move, nothing works.
Your body is in wait mode. Waiting till you get home!
Then, you finally get home and out of nowhere there is sudden movement! It just sneaks up on ya and what was once completely stuck is now just barreling through.
Yip, this is how God works.
You think there’s no movement. You think this will never change. You think you’re going to be stuck here forever. Then, out of nowhere, everything suddenly changes! It clicks. It happens. The door slings wide open. You have your breakthrough. You step into what God has been working on slowly, and it happens so suddenly.
If you’re in the “slowly” season of your life where you feel constipated with no movement, tell your swollen tummy IT’S GONNA HAPPEN. You don’t know when, but it will. God has not forgotten about you. He hasn’t abandoned you. He hasn’t given up on you. He’s working in unseen places preparing for a “suddenly” reveal for you.
My friend thought that change in her work schedule and relief for her family would never come. She waited. She prayed. She pushed through. Then suddenly, she stepped into what God had been lovingly preparing for her all along. It didn’t come out of nowhere … it came right out of the hands of a loving Heavenly Father who knew exactly what she needed and divinely aligned the details in ways she couldn’t imagine.
And let me tell you, when God aligns the details after a “slowly” season, the “suddenly” comes with insane perks. She not only gets to sleep like a normal person, have more family time, and work in a less stressful environment, but she will be making double! Isn’t that just like God?!!!
Why are we surprised when he does things like this? We shouldn’t be! And why are we disheartened when we’re in that slowly waiting pattern thinking it’s never going to happen for us? We shouldn’t be!
Our Bibles are full of examples of “wait for it, wait for it, wait for it … boom, there it is!”
In Genesis we read of Abraham and Sarah, waiting for a baby. They had waited so long, the time of it even being possible had come and gone. Maybe that’s you … whatever you’ve been waiting on doesn’t even seem possible now. Well, may I remind you, Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With God, all things are possible!” Your impossible that is way past the potential time of happening is still possible with God.
When Abraham was 75 years old, God promised he would make him a great nation, implying he would have children. And then, nothing. Nothing changed. His wife Sarah didn’t become pregnant. They had a promise of all this potential, but no proof in the pudding. For 25 more years, they waited, with no change. Had God forgotten them? Had God taken back his promise and changed his mind? Had God decided their failures and mistakes disqualified them of his promise? No.
And listen, because this is for you too. Your failures and mistakes have NOT disqualified you of God’s promises either! No matter how far you’ve gone or how long it’s been, God still knows every word spoken over you and every good plan he created you for. He hasn’t cancelled any of them! You’re just in the “slowly” season.
When Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90, suddenly she became pregnant! Oh it had been decades of waiting, wondering, worrying and wishing without any signs of God working, and it all changed in an instant. Here comes their long awaited baby, God’s promise fulfilled. How? Slowly, then suddenly!
You go from complete constipation to suddenly sprinting for that toilet because it’s happening, and it’s happening NOW! (Enter scenes from the movie Bridesmaids.)
I think about Joshua leading his Army in the battle of Jericho. Their battle plan made absolutely no sense. They were to march around these impossible walls they knew they couldn’t climb over or break through, for 6 days. Nothing else, just march. Then, on the 7th day, they were to march around 7 times. One circle around the walls was a mile and a half. So, on this day, they were to march 10.5 miles around impossible walls, listen for a horn to blown, then shout really loud. That was a slow process. Marching day 1. Marching day 2. Marching for more days. Then marching a really long way on the 7th day. Slowly. Not running. Marching. Slowly. Then, what would happen on the 7th circle on the 7th day when they all shouted?
Joshua 6:20, “When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.” Did you see it? It’s right there. It happened suddenly! Suddenly, the walls just fell down!
That doesn’t make any sense at all. Where the heck did that come from? How did the walls suddenly fall? That’s the result of a God who had been working in the unseen as his people remained faithful in the “slowly”.
Will you remain faithful in the “slowly”? If you will, there’s a “suddenly” prepared for you!
Your faithful next step in the slowly will lead you to a suddenly where you see those walls fall. It brings you to a suddenly where doors just open. It brings you to a suddenly where what was 100% impossible becomes your reality.
You’re in the already, but the not yet. God has already promised it. God has already ordained it. God has already aligned it. But you’re just not seeing it yet.
Your belly may be swollen from a lack of movement, but girl it’s coming … and it’s coming suddenly! The shy poops ain’t got nothing on a God who is willing to wait this out for a sudden breakthrough!
