Sometimes, don’t you just feel alone in the crowd? Like you’re lost in the mix and no one really knows what you’re battling. So, you battle alone. You fight those feelings alone. You wrestle those thoughts alone.
But, my sister, you are not alone. Ever. There hasn’t been a second of your existence that you were alone. When God promises that he will never leave you nor forsake you, he meant that for you personally, and he is fulfilling his promise. As proof, right here in the middle of you feeling lonely, you’re hearing these words. You are not alone. You are seen. You are loved. You are cared for.
Bob Goff taught me about a tribe that greets one another in their language with a word that means “I see you.” Instead of our distant, “hello”, they say, “I see you.” And when someone speaks this to you, your response is another word which means “It’s good to be seen.”
God is saying to you, his prized, precious and chosen girl, “I see you. I see what you’re going through. I see what you’re battling. I see what scares you. I see where you’re trying your best. I see where you’re giving up because you’re tired and discouraged. I see you, my girl.”
But, why is it when we’re struggling, we don’t want to be seen? We want to hide. We hide in shame and guilt. God, no, don’t look at me. Instead of, “God, it’s good to be seen”, we’re trying to run from his sight. Why do we do that? I believe it’s because we’ve put a big stick in the hand of an angry old gray haired man sitting on a throne looking down on us like ants. THAT IS NOT WHO OUR GOD IS!
Psalm 34: 15-17 “The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry; but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to blot out their name from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”
And this just put fear in your gut, didn’t it? Wait, am I righteous? I don’t feel righteous. And if I’m not righteous, does that mean I’m evil? Does that mean God is against me? Well, let’s address that!
You don’t always get this thing right, do you? You screw up your fair share. Sure, sometimes you get a little lazy. Sometimes you’re selfish. Sometimes your flesh puts your spirit in the corner. Sometimes your ego runs the show. Sometimes you play little, you sit it out, and you miss the opportunities God brings your way. But there’s one reason you’re not evil. And one reason is all you need, Sis, because that reason is Jesus. Scripture tells us that every single one of us have sinned and fallen short. None of us measure up. Not a single one of us alone is good enough. BUT JESUS …
Because of Jesus you are righteous. Romans 31:22 “Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” Well that’s pretty darn simple, now isn’t it? Do you place your faith in Jesus? Do you believe in Him? Not understand him. Not know everything about him. No, just believe in him with faith. Yes? Then you are RIGHTEOUS. And because you are righteous, God sees you. He hears you. His attention is on you and he will deliver you. He will come through for you. There’s no doubt about it!
Now, because you know God isn’t the angry old man with a big stick waiting to hit you, you can find peace in saying, “Ahhhhh, it’s good to be seen.” It’s good to know the one who can do something about this already knows about it. It’s good to know the one who can make this impossible I face radically turn around to become possible, already has a plan in action. It’s good to be seen by God.
Psalm 14:2 “From heaven the LORD looks down to see if anyone is wise enough to search for him.” I may not be wise enough to have it all figured out. I may not be wise enough to always get it right. I may not be wise enough to have all the answers or understand even half of it, but I am wise enough to search for God! That’s all God requires of you here. He doesn’t require your 10 year plan with sure fire steps that will all work perfectly. He doesn’t require your degree. He doesn’t require your good works. He doesn’t require your perfect track record of 100% days and laminated and checked to-do lists. He only requires that you be looking for him.
Just look for God today. Seek him out. Talk to him. When you do, God sees you from Heaven. And you know what’s happening in Heaven when he sees you searching for him? He’s aligning impossible things just for you! He’s unleashing his angels to do incredible things on your behalf. Things your mind can’t imagine. Goodness you can’t dream up on your own.
Hot dang it’s good to be seen!
Why would we ever hide from God?
2 Chronicles 16:9 “The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” God is looking, looking, looking, he’s searching the whole earth with the intent to find the ones who are committed to him, and as reward he pours out his strength to them. Other translations say when he finds those committed to him, he “strongly supports” them.
Woah, imagine waking up knowing you are STRONGLY SUPPORTED by God Almighty! Oh, that’s exactly what he wants to do, and he will, if you will just be fully committed to him. What would it look like to be fully committed to God? Well, it starts with putting him first. How many of you have joined me in the morning practice of hitting your knees when your alarm rings? (Remember, a perfect reminder to hit your knees is to put your alarm under your bed. You can’t forget, because you’ve got to get down there to turn that alarm off. And while you’re down there, you just pray. That’s starting your day with a commitment to God.)
How else can you be committed to God throughout your day? Could you just keep a conversation open and going with him? A hundred whispered thank yous as you see the beauty he has placed all around you, as you witness his split second miracles, as you discover his fingerprints on the details. Yes!
God wants you to be completely blown away by him. He’s been giving you undeniable proof of his presence in your life, have you been seeing it? Let me tell you, there are 3 very specific ways God has blown me away in the past 2 days. I mean for real, blown away!
First, on Sunday, I was scrolling through the photos on my iPad of one of my BIG Life girls being baptized in a beautiful, cold river in Colorado. On my phone I had my Spotify ‘BIG Life Mornings’ playlist going, as I always do. Then something crazy happened. Words from the exact song I was listening to started appearing on the photo of her being baptized. Right as the song on my phone was saying, “I’ve been saved! Good bye to the sinner, I’m held by the Father above. No more shame for I’m out of the desert and drowned in the power of love. Amazing grace, my soul set free, ain’t no devil got a hold on me!” those precise words appeared on her photo in beat with the same exact song playing on my phone. A random song in a playlist of over 16 hours of songs, divinely playing not at the hour, not at the minute, but at the SECOND those same words would appear on a photo of a precious soul being set free so no devil could ever get a hold on her again.
BLOWN AWAY!!!!!
Then, yesterday, I sat down with the prayer list on my phone, and I text a few of the girls I’ve been personally praying over to ask if I should turn that prayer into a praise, or continue praying in another specific way.
First, there’s Kristen, a podcast listener who has a precious baby girl named Charlotte, told by a doctor she’s one in a million babies and the only solution to her medical issues is to amputate her sweet little foot. I’ve been praying for a miracle for Charlotte. As I reached out for an update, at that precise moment, a song plays on my phone and the words say, “I’m perfectly made and perfectly loved. You see something great that you’re proud of. You don’t make mistakes.” Y’all, that’s the Holy Spirit, right there! That’s a divinely timed reminder that God didn’t make a mistake when he created precious little Charlotte. He is proud of what he made and she perfectly displays his image.
Finally, one more name on my prayer list I’ve been talking to God about. A song comes on my playlist that reminds me of her, a song that over a year ago I shared with her as she was going through a hard time. The song is called “Agradecido” by Danny Gokey. It simply means “grateful”. Grateful because God has been good, he has been faithful. I reach out to her by text and ask her if my prayer should now be a praise, and y’all, I’m not crapping you, she says, “You can actually play that song Agradecido and tell God thank you with me for all he has done. I’m so grateful.” She had no idea that was precisely the song I was listening to at that moment!
Again, wow God, blown away!
God is continually looking to blow you away. He sees you today. His eyes are searching for the one committed to him. He’s looking for the overflow of a grateful soul. The one who caught the blessings he’s been pouring out. The one who recognizes his fingerprints. The one who is no longer hiding, but saying, “God, it’s good to be seen by you!”
God says, “I see you.” And those made righteous through their faith in Jesus simply say, “it’s good to be seen!” Being seen by God radically changes everything!
