Owning a home comes with some serious negatives. If it’s broken, it’s on you. The moment that refrigerator starts making that funky noise, you start stressing. The moment you see that leak, you’re worried about how you’re going to pay for it. And have you ever noticed bad news seems to come in threes? The refrigerator goes out, the washing machine stops working, and the faucet starts leaking. What is up with that? Not just one thing, but three things?

Y’all, I haven’t had this type of worry in over 10 years. I no longer know what it’s like to worry about a noisy refrigerator or air conditioner that stops cooling. Many people think our vegabond gypsy lifestyle is bizarre, but we’ve been living in Airbnb vacation homes for years, and I know the extreme perks of this little beach house on the island not being mine. Primarily, hurricanes. I’m detached from the stress and simply enjoy the peace of being here every day there isn’t a hurricane. I live in paradise. Then when paradise isn’t so paradisey, I grab a suitcase and I leave. If something is broken, it’s not my burden. If something isn’t working, it’s really not my problem.

You know why? I have a landlord. There’s someone else who is responsible for this house, I just get to live here and enjoy it while I can. When there’s a problem, I pass the problem to the one who can do something about it … the landlord.

Whew, here I go with words again today. Looking at words for a deeper meaning. Land lord. The one who lords over the land where I temporarily live.

You and I have a “lifelord”. The one who lords over the life we temporarily live. Romans 14:8, “If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” He holds this in his hands. This is ultimately his, we’re just here renting space for the experience of being human beings before our eternal experience as the spiritual beings we really are. And ya’ll, we stress entirely too much about this temporary place we’re renting. You have a lifelord over all of this!

Are you letting him be lord of your life? Are you letting him care for the details of your life? Are you letting him have complete control? Are you trusting him to fix the things you cannot fix? Or are you living in a broken, messed up life, refusing to call in the help that is available?

How absurd would it be to be renting a house, but not tell the landlord about the toilets that won’t flush because you don’t have the money to fix them. Girl, you don’t need money to fix it when you have a landlord.

How crazy would it be to worry about how much the rotted out hole in the floor will cost when your landlord has all the money in the world. You keep walking around that hole, stressing the rest of the floor is going to cave in, and the landlord doesn’t even know about it? You haven’t even called him? He has the means to fix this, but you haven’t asked!

That’s exactly what we do.

Life gets broken. Things stop working. And we choose to sit and worry about it instead of calling our lifelord. Why wouldn’t you call on God?

What, you’re worried he’s too busy? Daniel 2:21 says “God controls time.” He has time because he holds all time.

What, you don’t call on God because you think he can’t help? Luke 1:37 says, “Nothing will be impossible with God.” Your impossible is 100% possible with God, but not without him.

What, you haven’t told God about this problem because you think he doesn’t really care about you? 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God because he cares about you.” I don’t see any qualifying factors following that. You’re not disqualified from his care. The creator of the universe cares about you! Believe it. Accept it. Start living like it. It sure changes things.

Step 1. You have to call on God.

You have to tell him about the problem. You have to ask him to help fix this. God is not limited on resources. ALL of this is his. Your entire life is his. He has the precise help you need and it’s not a problem for him to align it all for you. But you have to call him. Yeah, so lifelord, I’ve got this problem going on in this life you have loaned me. I’m going to need your help over here.

Step 2. You have to actually let God in.

If you call the landlord over to the house for the oven that’s not working, you can’t just keep the landlord at the door. He has to come in and take a look. You have to give him access. And sometimes the landlord himself doesn’t come over, but he sends a qualified repairman. You have to let that repairman in!

Sometimes God shows up himself to fix what you’ve got going on, but most times, he sends a qualified repairman. Someone he has called in for the job. Someone who has experience with what is wrong. Someone who can help. Someone who is on assignment to knock on your door, but you don’t want to let anyone in!

If I’m your friend, and I reach out to see how I can help you, why aren’t you letting me in? I may be the very person God has qualified to help you. I may be on assignment from God to help you fix this. Why are you keeping me and everyone else out? Do you want your dang oven fixed or not?

God has chosen, called and qualified professionals to help you. God’s spirit is literally working within these people in miraculous ways. They have the right words. They have the right care. They have the right next steps. They have it, because God has given it, and it’s precisely what you need to fix with the brokenness you’re living with. But they can’t help you if you won’t let them in.

The problem is, a whole lot of us have just settled for a kitchen with a broken oven because we’ve gotten used to the dysfunction. Ahhh, we can use the microwave instead. We can eat out again. We can get a little plug in oven. I’ll just store the pots and pans in the broken oven. It doesn’t have to stay broken! And you don’t have to know how to fix it yourself. You don’t even have to have the money to pay for it. You simply have to call the landlord, tell him about the problem, then let him or his representative in to fix it!

Stop settling for your broken dysfunction. It doesn’t have to be this way. The Lord of your life can help you with this. Does he even know about this problem? Have you told him about the issue you’re having? Have you been watching for who he may send to help?

I have a very dear friend who got a phone call last week that her biopsy results were not what we had hoped for. It’s cancer. I keep checking in to see how she’s processing this news as she awaits surgery. And she said, “I feel strangely disconnected from it all.” She wasn’t sure where this was coming from. Was it some sort of dysfunction where she avoids the emotion of hard things? Was it some sort of denial? Should she be stressed? Should she be worried? Should she be overly emotional?

This morning after praying for her again, I overheard a familiar scripture quoted on the podcast I was listening to. You know how sometimes you hear something and it just hits different? Yeah, this time it hit different. Philippians 4: 6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is peace. This is the result of prayer. This is what happens when you have a lifelord, and you call him. You tell him about the problem you’re facing in this life you’ve temporarily leased from him, and then you let him in to do his work. As a result, you have peace over your heart and mind. The one who owns it all is managing it all. You can disconnect from the issue and know it’s being taken care of.

How ridiculous would it be for me to call the landlord of my house because of a problem happening in the plumbing, then pace the floor in fear, walking circles around him cryig while he’s working on it. Girl, get out of the way! You’re a mess! The landlord doesn’t need you stressing about his house that he has the ability to fix. And the lord of your life doesn’t need you stressing about the details of your life he is already working on.

You call him in. You let him in. And step 3, you get out of the way.

Your worry is in the way.

God can heal anything that needs to be healed. He can repair anything that has been broken. He can move anything that is in the way. He can rebuild anything that has been destroyed. He can resurrect anything that is too far gone. This is all his, and he can do it!

Enjoy the benefits of living in a body that is on lease. Take care of it, be grateful for it, but ultimately remember you’re leasing this and the maker of this thing is in control. Your entire life is in his hands. And those hands … those hands also hold every single thing you could ever want or need. He has it all. He’s not limited or lacking in any way.

Call him over. Let him in. Then get out of the way.

Receive your peace knowing the lord of your life is working on this for you and it’s not yours to worry about!
