Before 2024 Goals – Questions 5 & 6

When God created you, he did so with tremendous purpose. Every detail of you was meticulously chosen with intention. Who you are, what makes you tick, how you think, what interests you, what you’re good at … none of that is random. It’s all what makes you a unique masterpiece of the Almighty.

Now, what God desires of you in 2024 is to step fully into who he created you to be. To use your gifts for his glory. To live in a way that points to a supernatural power working within you. And how God wants to work in you is different than how he wants to work in me. We all represent a different aspect of the same great big God, so let’s represent him well in our own unique way as we were designed to.

I love people. Like seriously, I LOVE people. I love being with people. I love sharing life. I love being close. And I really love learning about people and coming to understand how they uniquely represent the character of God. I study all of the personality tests. The love languages, the tendencies, the colors, the enneagram. And here’s what I’ve found, with all of our differences, we’re all equal. One is not better than another, it’s just different.

But here’s what has become very clear to me in loving people and studying our unique design … all strengths become a weakness when out of balance. God may have created you to be a giver. But an out of balance giver is a person who secretly feels used and taken for granted and becomes bitter. God may have created you to be a leader. But an out of balance leader is a person who pushes too hard and becomes a bossy tyrant. God may have created you to be an organized, disciplined person. But an out of balance disciplined person completely misses the point of what they’re doing and they become miserable. And out of balance organized person becomes stuck in the details and overwhelmed in the process.

What God created for absolute goodness in your life can wreck havoc and spin you completely out of control.

Me … well, if you haven’t figured me out, I’m a flaming 7 on the enneagram. I’m the enthusiast, the adventurer. I make everything more fun and more exciting. It’s more, then more, and even more! That’s absolutely fantastic, until it’s out of balance. An out of balance enthusiast will hang party streamers in a house that is burning down. An out of balance adventurer will never enjoy the moment they’re in and always rush to the next, bigger, more exciting thing. Y’all, if I’m out of balance, I’m a flaming hot mess that lights everything I touch on fire. If I’m in balance, I’m a girl on fire for Jesus who invites everyone else to come in close for a life changing experience.

GOD WANTS YOU IN BALANCE! He doesn’t want to change you into someone else. God likes who he created you to be. I think you really need to hear that because you may still be focused on the fact that you wish you were someone else. God doesn’t want you to be someone else. God wants you to be YOU, but he wants you to be balanced! Repeat after me: God likes me.

How hard is that for you to believe? The harder it is for you to accept that God likes you, the more damage the enemy has done in your life. Are you going to just let the enemy continue his hayday? Are you going to just throw your hands up and surrender to his plan to spin you out of control and leave you in a mess? No, girl, you’ve got to fight back. Fight to get your life back. Fight to get who you were created to be back!

And that brings us to today’s questions in our series preparing us to write our goals.

Question #5 to ask your Creator before you write your 2024 goals: God, where do you want me to change?

Philippians 1:6, “I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

God’s still working on you! That’s not a bad thing, that’s a beautiful thing. He will continue to work on you until Jesus comes back. The very best thing you can do is surrender to his work and partner with him. Be moldable in his hands and stop fighting the process.

God doesn’t want to start all over in creating you. Remember, he likes you. He likes how he designed you. He knows the purposes for your life and he perfectly equipped you to walk in those purposes. Now, he’s just getting you in balance.

Lord, where am I out of balance? Where have the strengths you’ve given me become a weakness? Where do you want to refine me in the New Year? How do you want to bring me back into alignment with my greatest potential?

If you ask God, he will show you. He will reveal to you how those little mis-truths need to get cleaned up. He will show you what relationships or conversations need to change. He will show you where your time is being wasted. He will show you what routines have gotten off course. He will show you what priorities have been taken over by less important things.

And when he shows you, write it down. These become goals to work on in 2024!

Really, you want God inspired goals? This is the process! I know it’s not as flamboyant and “ah-ha” moment filled as you had hoped, but it is more powerful than you can imagine! When the Holy Spirit reveals an area out of balance in your life, respond with a commitment to working on it! This is how God’s good work in you continues!

He created you just as he wanted you, and he really likes you. Now, he wants to help you get in balance!

Question #6 to ask your Creator before you write your 2024 goals: God, what do you want me to give up?

Do you remember the story of the rich young man approaching Jesus and asking what he needed to do to get to Heaven? This was a man who followed all the rules, checked all the boxes, and looked good on the outside. So, when Jesus told him, he should give up everything he had and come follow him, scripture says in Matthew 19: 22, “But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.”

Was it about his money? Was it about his house? Was it about any of his possessions? No, it was about what he allowed to get in the way of following Jesus.

What has gotten in the way of you following Jesus? What has gotten in the way of you fully stepping into the life he is calling you to? My sister, let me put it this way, whatever you’re holding back is actually holding you back!

God has so much more for us. He promises his plans for us are higher, better, greater and bigger than our minds can even imagine. But here we are, holding on to crap that is only holding us back. What would happen if you let it go?

Let go of the crutch you’ve been using for years to help you cope. Let go of the little guilty pleasure that makes you feel better. Let go of the bad habit that secretly makes you hate yourself. Let go of the things that are literally taking you in the opposite direction of the life you want and the life God wants for you.

What is the trajectory of your current choices? If you continue doing precisely what you have been doing this year for the next 5 years, where will you be? Will you have the health you want? The relationships you want? The finances you want? Or will you be deeper in a hole you never wanted to be in? Something has to change for your life to change.

Lord, show me what needs to change. Show me what I need to give up. Show me what I’m holding back that is holding me back. Holy Spirit, convict me, make it clear. I lossen my grip, I open my hand and I’m willing to give some things up.

I give up the old story I’ve been telling. I give up the shame, guilt and regret of the past. I give up the pain I keep reliving. I give up the anger, the resentment, the bitterness. I give up the bad habit. I give up the wasting of my days. I give up what has taken your place in my life. I give up the relationships I know are not right. I give up control. I give up fear. I give up worry. I give it all to you.

That rich young man walked away sad because he just couldn’t give up what he held on to. So, what he held on to held him back. Jesus was inviting him to follow him, just as he had the other disciples. But he walked away from the opportunity of a lifetime. Don’t let that be you. Jesus is inviting you to follow him into a life that is greater than you can imagine, but you’ve got to give up some things in the process.

Spend time today bringing these two questions to God, and journal the answers he gives you. Seek him and you will find him. Ask and he will answer. These answers become the most powerful goals you could ever write for the New Year of life in the offering to you.

I’m genuinely excited for you, Sis. Your life could radically change right here!
