What are your plans? For real, what have you been planning to do? Plans for your future. Plans for a move. Plans for a career. Plans for a vacation.
As humans, we tend to make plans because God makes plans. We’re made in his image, so naturally, we make plans too. And your plans are not a bad thing. In fact, you should use your God given ability to make plans. Planning for absolutely nothing creates a boring, stagnant life with unmet potential. But as you make your plans, remember this, GOD HAS PLANS FOR YOU TOO! His plans are guaranteed to be good. His plans are guaranteed to prosper. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
God is simply asking that your plans be committed to him. Proverbs 16: 3, “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” Verse 9, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
These plans that you’ve been making, let me ask you, have you committed them to God?
What does it mean to commit your plans to God? The Hebrew word for “commit” is gol which means to roll. So, think about that … God’s word is telling you to roll your plans on over to him. When you roll something it’s because it’s too heavy to carry. I don’t pick up that boulder, I try to roll that boulder.
My life plans are too heavy for me. I can’t carry them, nor can I fulfill them well. You know what happens when I try to fulfill my plans my way? I make a mess! I make commitments I regret. I open doors to rooms I have no business being in. I create undue pressure and stress. However, I can avoid all of this if I roll those plans on over to God and ask him for help.
God didn’t create us to be mindless robots. Instead, he planted dreams and desires within us and gave us the ability to make plans. This is a gift with divine design. We’re not to waste it. Instead, we’re to partner with our creator to bring our plans to their fullest potential.
Is that the step you’ve forgotten? Did you forget to roll this plan on over to God? Did you forget to bring it to him for review first?
Why wouldn’t we bring our plans to God before we take our next steps? Oh I know exactly why … because I do it. I try to just sneak in my plans under the radar of God because I’m afraid he will shoot them down. Girl, do you know how totally impossible it is to sneak anything under God’s radar? He is omniscient meaning he KNOWS EVERYTHING, he is omnipresent which means he IS EVERYWHERE, and he is omnipotent, meaning he is all-power over EVERYTHING. You’re not sneaking this by him!
But I try! I can’t tell you how many fun adventures I’ve tried to sneak by God. I was so afraid God would spoil my fun if I talked to him about it first. I often tease it’s better to ask forgiveness after than permission first. Yes, that’s true of a public water fountain that in my opinion was absolutely made for splashing in with your girlfriend … however it’s not true of our God.
Here’s what we forget about God … God loves to say YES. He loves to go above and beyond. He loves to absolutely blow us away with indescribable beauty and quirky details. Look at creation. Look at the puffer fish … how fun is that little fella that just puffs up. Look at the sunset that could have been in gray tones, but instead God chose to paint it in our favorite colors.
Ephesians 3:20 tells us that God is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” Those big dreams that you have within you, let me tell you something, God’s not interested in shooting them down. Those hopes you have of beautiful things for your future, God’s not shaking his head at them. No! Instead God is saying I CAN GO EXCEEDINGLY AND ABUNDANTLY ABOVE THAT FOR YOU, MY GIRL!
If you will roll those plans on over to me, I can do even greater things than you can possibly imagine.
Go ahead and dare to think of your biggest, grandest, most ridiculous plan right now … you know, the one that is almost embarrassing because it seems ridiculously impossible … think of it right now. God says, “If you will commit that to me, roll it on over into my hands, I can go even above it!”
I have plans for a cross country roadtrip in a vintage Volkswagen bus as my mobile studio and taking the BIG Life Devotionals on tour. I want to come to your area. I want to set up in your local park. I want to sip coffee with you and share some Jesus time with you. I want you to come sit in the BIG Life VW Bus and take a photo! I want you to have an encounter with the love of Jesus that you will just never forget. And I want us to have epic adventures along the way!
Why would I ever hold those plans in my own hands when I have a great big God who can do so much more? I’m committing it to God, just rolling it right on over, so he can get all up in the details with his ability to go exceedingly and abundantly above, and do infinitely more. He’s not dismissing me from the work. He’s partnering with me in the work.
God’s not dismissing you from the work of the plans you have either. Oh no, my sister, he’s inviting you to roll those plans on over to him, then trust him to guide you in your obedient, faith-filled next steps. He wants a partnership with you in those plans. A partnership that doesn’t dismiss your plans, but goes exceedingly and abundantly above them in the way only God can!
