Wouldn’t you just love to know precisely what to do next? A clear yes or a clear no from a God who’s plans are specific and promised to be good. How exactly do you get that? Can you get that?
Do you remember the Magic 8 Ball back in the 80’s? You could ask it a question and it would appear with an answer. There were 10 positive answers such as, “It is certain. Yes, definitely. Without a doubt.” There were 7 negative answers such as, “Don’t count on it. My sources say no. Very doubtful.” Then there were 5 very non-committal answers everyone hated such as, “Cannot predict now. Ask again later.”
How many of us could confess to standing in the mall with a rhinestoned denim jacket with shoulder pads and consulting the Magic 8 Ball for love advice. “Should I date Tim? Will I marry Danny?” And how many of us would also confess to shaking that thing and asking again until we got the answer we wanted?!!!!
Now here we are, all grown up, still insisting on only the answers we want.
Question: “Should I leave this job I hate?”
Answer: “You should be faithful with the job you have while you actively pursue a different job.”
But, I don’t like that answer! I want to be a miserable hag at this job and let everyone know how much I hate it until the day I up and quit! To which God says, “My sources say NO!”
Did you know God actually directed the Priests of the Old Testament to use a material object to determine his will? Yes, for real. They were much like holy dice or the divine version of the Magic 8 Ball. But stay tuned, because we’re also going to see a very clear command that we are NOT to use these things for ourselves now.
In Exodus 28, God speaks with Moses and gives him detailed instructions on making the clothing for his brother Aaron and Aaron’s sons who would be God’s priests. Verse 15, “With great skill and care, make a chestpiece to be worn for seeking a decision from God.” The chestpiece was made of fine linen and folded to make a pouch that was 9 inches square. Verse 30, “Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the Lord’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the Lord’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the Lord.”
The Bible is not clear on specifically what the Urim and Thummim are, but several times in scripture, we read of the Priests consulting them for God’s divine guidance in exactly what to do. The best guess is they were stones or jewels which would light up within the chestpiece and cause a glowing of some sort to indicate God’s answers to the questions presented by the Priests in his holy presence.
“Where should we go next? What should we do now? Who do we choose?” These were all questions asked of God through the Urim and Thummim. When God answered, his answer was to be obeyed without hesitation. This was God’s chosen way for seeking his guidance in the decision making process.
So, where is our Urim and Thummim today? Is this what astrology, numerology, crystal balls, horoscopes and tarot cards are? How about fortune-tellers, palm readers, and mediums? Can we seek God’s answers in material objects or humans with seemingly mystical powers?
God’s word is actually unmistakably clear about this. Deuteronomy 18: 10-11, “Do not let your people practice fortune telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
This could seem confusing. On one hand God clearly says to use Urim and Thummim within the Priest’s breastplate that would determine God’s will in a very definitive and recognizable way, and yet God says not to practice any type of sorcery or fortune telling. And I assure you of this, the enemy of your soul LOVES this confusion. He loves to muddy the waters and blur the lines. He loves to slip in through the cracks of confusion and attack in the darkness. No doubt, the enemy has tricked some of us. We’ve been confused. We’ve been tricked, and we’ve been playing with detestable things.
Lord, please forgive us of any use of these detestable things. Forgive us for unknowingly shaking a Magic 8 Ball for teenage love advice. Forgive us for reading horoscopes to make our plans. Forgive us for a tarot card we sought for guidance. Forgive us for ever dialing up a psychic or stepping behind a curtain of a fortune teller. You take this seriously Lord, and so will we. We seriously seek your forgiveness now. In the name of Jesus, we slam any doors we have opened to the enemy and rebuke the work of his demons in our lives. Lord, we didn’t know what we were doing and we are so sorry.
So, let’s be clear. The use of Urim and Thummim was designed by God and it was only to be used by the Priests within the Tabernacle. No other place, no other person for no other purposes. None. Ever.
Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, we have direct communication with God ourselves. Before Jesus, God’s presence was off-limits and you would surely die if you approached him yourself. Divine measures were required to consult with God. But now, we have the divine ability to pray to God directly and receive guidance from him. And that’s precisely what we are supposed to be doing.
Oh how we take our access to the Almighty for granted. His Holy Spirit is literally living within us, guiding us and prompting us. All we have to do is seek him and follow him. Every single next step and holy answer is right here for us. Because of Jesus, we have no need for Urim and Thummim. To wish for material objects of clear guidance is to reject the gift of the Holy Spirit.
There’s not a tarot card in the world that knows what my God knows. There’s not a fortune teller behind any curtain who holds the truth my God holds. There’s not a horoscope, crystal ball, astrology or numerology with the power of my God. God absolutely detests them all. He’s directly given you his Holy Spirit … isn’t that more than all of this?!!!!!
Jesus says in John 14:26 that GOD will give you the Holy Spirit which will teach you EVERYTHING.
James 1:5-6, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.”
God is asking for your total faith in HIM ALONE. Absolutely NOTHING ELSE. Your divided faith isn’t good enough. Absolutely no dabbling with anything else. You ask God for guidance, and you trust that he alone will give it to you.
When Jesus tells me that the Holy Spirit will teach me EVERYTHING, then I believe he means EVERY THING. Every single thing I need to know can be taught to me through the Holy Spirit. He can tell me what to do, how to do it and when to do it. He can give me my next steps. He can direct me in the way to go. He can open my eyes to what I’ve been overlooking. He can direct me to his divine alignments.
There’s absolutely no need for us to wish for the Urim and Thummim of the Old Testament. We have the upgrade and we have it personally. We have the Holy Spirit teaching us everything, if only we ask. But remember, when you ask, you must have faith ONLY in God. Nothing else. Everything else must be released!
God’s calling on his girls to seek Him fully, and him only. If you’ve been dabbling in anything else, he’s making it clear to repent and turn fully to him.
The guidance we seek for our life decisions come only through getting to know the Guide!
Holy Spirit, YOU BE MY GUIDE!
